I'd recommend a look at the "Whitespace sucker" module I made some time ago - it's distributed with Roxen 2.2, but should work at least in 2.1 too and probably already in 2.0 (although I haven't really tried myself). Download a recent version from http://community.roxen.com/developers/cvs/browse.html?file_id=3616
