Subject: 3rd party module installation issues?

Post:each time i try to add a 3rd party module it takes hours sometimes.
i copy the module into the local/modules directory, then i create the virtual server and go to add a new module. then i wait while it loads all the data for the modules, but the new one doesn't show up. so i go clear the module cache, and directory cache. i go back to the virtual server, and try to add it again. same thing happens.
am i doing something wrong, or just missing a step?
